2012 was an excellent season completing our 8th year of existence with our emerging and growing opera company. Most notably, we added performances in downtown Miami at the beautiful Olympia Theater of the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, expanding our audience base. Our productions of Tosca, Lucia di Lammermoor, Madama Butterfly, and The Barber of Seville were well received by our audiences and the media. This expansion is another milestone in our quest to present Miami Lyric Opera as a true operatic alternative in South Florida.
Our 2013 Opera Season brings new challenges as the economy struggles through difficult times. We very well recognize this situation, and are consciously struggling to do more with less in order to assure the permanent presence of our work in the community.
It is with great pleasure that we announce the 2013 Opera Season, which will include some new titles for our company, in addition to previously performed repertoire, and will conclude with a Gala Concert in homage of the 200 Anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birth (October 10, 1813).
Bizet’s Carmen will open the season, followed by Puccini’s Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi, Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball), Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana and Puccini’s Suor Angelica. We have selected wonderful artists that are suitable for each role. Additionally, we are developing new talents in some of our productions as part of our mission at MLO.
We are proud to see how many young artists and new talents received their break-through opportunity at MLO and are now performing in major opera houses – not only in the U.S., but also in internationally. Personally, I am very happy to see that development in our company even more when we can introduce new singers to perform traditional opera with great respect to the composer and libretto, and in the tradition of belcanto.
